Notes: Replacing the 960/S90 models, the 1999 S80 became Volvo's flagship model. Unlike its antecedents, the new S80 was a front-wheel-drive sedan, with a transversely-mounted six-cylinder inline engine. This configuration, unique in the modern automobile, offered the frontal impact safety inherent to a transverse engine design (i.e., a particularly sturdy wall between the bumper and passenger compartment) with the power necessary to compete in the mid-luxury class. Fully outfitted with safety features, including one of the first uses of curtain airbags, the S80 was available in two trim levels, the base 2.9 and the twin-turbo T6. It was the most aerodynamic Volvo to date, and set a bold new standard for the company.
