Notes: With a new Golf family arriving in Europe, Volkswagen decided to celebrate the end of the line with the R32, the most powerful Golf variant ever to come out of Wolfsburg. The R32 was equipped with the 3.2L VR6 from Audi, generating 240 horsepower. To compensate for the feared torque-steer, VW equipped the R32 with all-wheel drive, the first such application in the Golf family (at least in America). In effect, Volkswagen created its own competitor to the Subaru WRX and the Mitsubishi Evo, in a hot-hatch package. The car was also something of a a Q-ship: only enlarged lower air dams at the front and rear, along with subtle "R32" badging, warned of the car's power. The car was also packed with more standard features than any other Golf or Jetta model. Only 5000 were sold in the United States during its one-year production run.
