Notes
A new trim, a new engine and a new transmission highlighted the changes to the Toyota Camry for its
third year on the fifth-generation chassis. The new Standard model slotted in below the LE,
replacing the CE model of the previous generation. Priced a full grand below the LE models,
the Standard included almost all equipment found on the LE, with only a couple exceptions:
the spare tire was a compact, the security system was unavailable, and no V6 model was
offered. ABS was optional for the Standard, as on the LE, however, other options, such as
the Convenience Package, were unavailable. In fact, only the antilock brakes and side airbags
were options for the standard model, making it quite close to a monospec version of the Camry.
Another new model (of sorts) was the Limited Edition Camry, actually an option package for the
LE model. It added a CD changer, leather-wrapped wheel, woodgrain trim, floormats, fog lights, 16" alloys,
and a unique grille treatment. Six-cylinder SE models switched from the 3.0L
engine (shared with the Avalon) to a new bored-out version displacing 3.3 liters (now
standard on the ES sedan the redesigned RX crossover-utility). However,
the 3.0L (now with 18 extra horsepower) remained standard for the LE V6 and XLE V6 --
it was 15 horsepower behind the new engine, with a 1 mpg advantage in city driving. Both
V-6 engines were now teamed with a new 5-speed automatic transmission. Prices stayed the same
as '03 (except for the SE V6),
although the destination charge increased by $30.
