$19,995

Notes: Unchanged in its third year, the Toyota hybrid continued to offer a basic package with relatively few option. Despite, or perhaps in part due to, its space-age console, the Prius continued to sell well, despite a faltering economy and a design that was effectively five years old (Prius arrived in Japan in 1999). ABS was standard, as was air conditioning. Note also that its MSRP remained unchanged since its 2001 introduction. Toward the end of the first-generation production run, Toyota broke even on the investment required to produce the parallel-hybrid-drive car. The last few units off the line were thus made the Prius the first profitable hybrid vehicle.
