Notes: In its second year, the hybrid Prius turned a profit. It
remained, however, a rather uneconomical prospect unless one intended
to keep the car for over a decade and drive it extensively. Cruise
control became an option for 2001, as did a navigation system. Adding to
cabin safety were newly optional side airbags. Honda provided a true
rival for the Prius for 2002 with the Civic Hybrid. Prius, however,
remained the most economical 5-seater in the United States.
