Notes

In its third season, Toyota added some technological magic to its mid-engined roadster. For $730, buyers of the MR2 Spyder could opt for the SMT model, with its sequential manual gearbox. This gearbox, a recent favorite of Ferrari cars and the Aston Martin Vanquish (and soon to make its way into many other makes as well) was a sophisticated retake on the traditional manual transmission. With an electrohydraulic clutch and no clutch pedal, shifting was accomplished by simply by moving the shift lever fore or aft, or by pressing wheel-mounted buttons. With no torque converter, shifts were quick and sharp, sometimes to the point of jerky. Several safeguards prevented the unwary from getting themselves into trouble: the transmission would not allow a downshift if the change would exceed the redline, and the gearbox reset itself into first gear at a stop, to prevent stalling. Other than that, though, no provision existed for automatic control of shifting. However, the SMT did include cruise control. No other changes were made to the MR2 for '02.
