Notes
The debut of the fifth-generation Camry stretched the
wheelbase of the midsize sedan by two inches, to 107.1 (the same
length as the 2000 Avalon series). In fact, with its enlarged cabin and
an even bigger trunk, the new Camry was only one cubic foot shy of being
classed as a large car. Bolder headlamps, a taller roofline, and taillights
reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class marked the new design. A new 2.4L
I4 base engine added 25bhp over the 2001 2.2L while maintaining similar
fuel economy; the V6 remained unchanged. Content was increased
for the base model Camry LE; the stripped-out CE model was discontinued.
America's best-selling car retained its throne by offering many features
while maintain build quality and low prices. Almost all were American-built.
The LE model was actually cheaper in 2002 than it was in 1995,
despite having far more feature content. Standard features in the LE
included air con, auto-off lights, cruise control, power mirrors, and a
cassette/CD system. SE models added a sportier setup, with a larger
anti-sway bar, 16" wheels (a Camry first), decklid spoiler, some
leather-trimmed surfaces, and fog lamps. XLEs offered amenities including automatic
climate control, power front seats, a JBL sound system, keyless entry, and an anti-theft
device. Only six-cylinder models could be equipped with optional traction and stability
control (this also came with brake assist to maximize the efficacy of anti-lock brakes);
no manual was available with V6 models. New options for the fifth-generation models
included a navigation system with touch screen functionality, and side torso airbags
were available too, packaged with curtain airbags for all outboard passengers.
Nissan's Altima was brand-new this year as well, and redesigned models from Honda
and Mazda were only a year away. Compared to these models, the Camry continued to emphasis
comfort and road isolation at the expense of sporting intent.
