Notes

Moving to inject some sport into its staid lineup, Toyota redesigned the Celica and resurrected the MR2 for 2000. The new MR2 was a true spyder, a two-seat roadster with a manual ragtop. Extremely low and compact, the MR2 tied its four-cylinder motor to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission -- there was no room for Toyota to mount a torque-converter for a slushbox. Lack of space was perhaps the car's leitmotif: although the cabin was reasonably comfortable, storage space was negligible. Less than one-half of a cubic foot was available in the front, where the spare tire and radiator were housed. A small tray compartment sat atop the dashboard, supplementing the glovebox. No real trunk existed: the only other storage provided was in a pair of locking bins behind the bucket seats, which together could hold 1.5 cubic feet of luggage. The MR2 could only do runs to the grocery store if the driver went alone. Standard equipment included power windows, locks, and mirrors. Air conditioning and a cassette/CD player were also fitted. The MR2 Spyder was sold mono-spec; no options were available except as dealer-installed accessories, and those were precious few. Low sales volume restricted availability of this roadster, but those who bought it had a wonderfully tossable (if somewhat impractical) joyride.
