Notes
For 2006, the Verona lineup was trimmed to just two models. The S was
renamed as simply the base model, and the EX became the Luxury trim;
the mid-range LX was cancelled. Antilock brakes were standardized
for all trims. A redesigned sunroof (for quieter operation), and
a new cruise control system (for better accuracy) were added, as well.
Suzuki also switched to a space-saver spare tire for 2006, probably
as a weight-saving measure. Suzuki continued to market the car, with
its incremental equipment improvements, as an upscale car with a
bargain price tag; the Verona's European styling heritage was repeatedly
raised in Suzuki's promotional materials. However, the Verona's price
had risen notably against the competition, such that it was no longer
such an easy sell on price. It was not, in the end, an easy sell at all;
only 2,302 Veronas were sold in all of 2006. Frustrated at the lack
of sales success, Suzuki pulled the plug on its Camry-fighter, and
the Verona was pulled from the US market after 2006. It remains a
bit of an enigma, to this day: so few were sold that Consumer Reports
cannot calculate its predicted reliability, a rare thing for a mainstream
sedan. Suzuki would wait several years, teasing the automotive press
with various concept cars, before re-entering the brutal midsize segment.
