Notes: With the 993-series five years old (in some markets), Porsche
introduced a new 911 for the 1999 model year. Far more than the
evolutionary changes of previous 911's, this model was radically new.
For the first time, Porsche's beloved flat-six engine was water-cooled,
departing from the air-cooled legacy of the 911. A half-foot longer than
the previous generation, the 996-series 911 offered better accomodations,
front and rear. This new 996 model
shared a great deal of its front-end styling with the cheaper Boxster,
causing a great outcry among enthusiasts. However, there was little
doubt but that this was a further improved development of Zuffenhausen's
classic sports car. Both coupe and convertible versions were offered
in rear and- all-wheel drive variants. While the Cabriolet models did
offer a power-operated soft top, they suffered from the ignominy of a
plastic backlight. Improved though it was, the new 911 still lacked that
most American of automotive conveniences, cupholders.
