2004 Nissan Maxima
Body style(s): 4-door sedan
Trim Levels: SE 6-speed, SE automatic, SL
MSRP range: $26,950-$28,900
Notes: Entering its sixth iteration (and that's just under the Nissan
name), the Maxima was redesigned for 2004. Now based on a somewhat
enlarged version of the Altima platform, the Maxima was equipped with
the ubiquitous 3.5L VQ V6 that made its home under seemingly every Nissan
and Infiniti hood. It retained a front-drive layout. The outmoded beam
axle that had been part of the Maxima's previous design was ditched and
replaced by a new independent multilink suspension. Traction control and
antiskid systems were available only on models with automatic transmissions;
the SE 6-speed made do with a limited-slip front differential. Nissan
attempted to market the Maxima as a more upscale Altima, nearly placing
it in the near-luxury market, but not quite, and nearly chasing European
sports sedans, but also not quite. The Maxima's downfall, noted by anybody
who test-drove it, was heavy torque steer from the front-end drivetrain
trying to cope with the powerful V6. At least the styling was evocative.
