Mitsubishi Lancer Overview
The Mitsubishi Lancer has a history dating back to 1973. Its export career
began soon after, and in fact, the car made an appearance in the US market
long before Mitsubishi-badged cars were on sale Stateside: the early-1970s
Dodge & Plymouth Colts were Lancers (before they began using the Mitsubishi
Mirage chassis instead), as was the Plymouth Arrow coupe. When Mitsubishi did
finally reach the US market, it sold a series of subcompacts and compacts,
most notably the Mirage, until 2002, when the Lancer arrived. By this
time, the car had gained a reputation worldwide in rallying circles,
thanks to its all-wheel drive, turbocharged submodel, the Lancer
Evolution (known to enthusiasts as the Evo). The Evo arrived on American
shores in 2003, just a year behind its milder sibling. The Lancer was
offered first as a sedan, with a 4-door wagon added later.
