Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Overview
The S-Class has long been one of the premier luxury cars in the world.
Although several Mercedes-Benz models bore the S label from the late
1950s, the first sedan family officially named "S-Class" debuted in
MY1973. Since then, it has been redesigned only four times. S-Class
models have long been early pioneers of emerging automotive technologies.
Initially overshadowed somewhat by the 600/Pullman sedans, the S-Class
became the Mercedes flagship upon the Pullman's retirement in 1980,
and remains so to this day (DaimlerChrysler's resurrected Maybach brand
notwithstanding). Over the years, the S-Class line has been equipped with
engines ranging from six-cylinder diesels to twin-turbocharged vee-twelves.
S-Class models have primarily been sedans, although coupes were sold for
some time before being spun off as the CL-Class.
