Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

Overview

The CLS-Class was one of Mercedes-Benz's early uses of a mass-market platform to build a unique, niche vehicle. Partially aimed at rumored sporty sedans from Jaguar and Audi, partially a competitor to the BMW 6-Series, and something unique as well, the CLS was introduced as "the world's first four-door coupe." Some purists objected that a coupe was by definition a 2-door only affair, and others objected that Rover had built a 4-door coupe in the 1970s. Irrespective of nomenclature, the car was an attractive vehicle, using E-Class mechanicals as its base. It arrived for the 2006 model year (three years after its E-Class donor), and was immediately updated for 2007 with new engines. The CLS-Class was a quick sales hit, creating a perceived luxury niche of so-called 4-door coupes, and prompted the development of such competitors as the Audi A7.
