Notes: The new-for-2003 SL-Class was the fifth generation of Mercedes's
Sport-Leicht roadster, which began life as the Gullwing in the
1950s. The new R230, while sporty (especially in its powertrain), was
not, however, light by any stretch of the imagination. The new roadster
was available only with V8 engines for 2003; a V12-powered SL600 debuted
for 2004, and the SL350 six-cylinder was not imported at all. The SL500 was the base model, with a 5.0L naturally-aspirated
V8. The hyper-aspirated SL55 was the first AMG version of the SL-Class
roadster. With massive brakes (with 8-piston calipers in the front) and
the supercharger, the SL55 was clearly Mercedes-Benz's performance
flagship. Both were driven by a five-speed automatic gearbox coupled to
the rear wheels. While manumatic operation was available on both, only
the SL55 AMG offered buttons on the steering wheel to control the shifts.
A power-operated hardtop was the only roof choice, a class-leading feature.
In just 16 seconds, the top-flight Mercedes could switch from closed
coupe to open roadster. The new SL-Class had a bevy of other high-tech features. It used
brake-by-wire technology, meaning there was no direct linkage between
brake pedal and the rotors. An active suspension system used coil and
air springs, and obviated the need for an anti-roll bar. An automatic
rollbar was also available, and would deploy if sensors indicated that
the car was rolling over. A Panorama glass roof was optional. Coefficient of
drag: only 0.29 with the top up, and 0.34 with it down. Impressive, indeed.
All in all, the new SL-Class represented a superb open-top grand tourer.
