2003 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class
Body style(s): 2-door hardtop sedan
Trim Levels: CL500, CL55 AMG, CL600
MSRP range: $91,650-$124,900
Notes: As in the S-Class, the CL55 AMG and CL600 received new engines
for 2003. The CL55 simply added a supercharger to its 5.4L engine. The
CL600, however, received an all-new engine derive from the Maybach sedan.
This V12 featured a reduced displacement, but added twin turbochargers.
The end result was a gain of 131 horsepower, and such frightful mileage
that even the rich might have paid attention. The brakes on the CL55/CL600
were upgraded as well. A slightly more scowling
front fascia, with bi-xenon headlamps, completes the list of changes for
2003. At the Geneva Auto Show in 2003, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an even
more powerful derivative of the CL-Class, the CL65 AMG. It would make its
way into production for 2004. As of '03, the long-speculated CL Cabriolet
still had not appeared.
