Notes: The famous Galaendewagon arrived on US shores for the first time (officially) in time for the 2002 model year. Although new to America, the G-Class had a storied history in Europe as one of the most capable off-road vehicles available. Having seen it sold for years on the grey market, Mercedes-Benz decided to rake in the money themselves for 2002. Built in Graz, Austria, Mercedes's big truck was outfitted with standard 4-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case which could be engaged electronically at up to 15 miles per hour. Unlike many such systems, the 4-wheel drive system was permanently engaged, with a standard 50/50 front/rear torque split. The G-Class was the only SUV on the market with three locking differentials: front, center, and rear. Traction control and an antiskid system were standard, as was an antilock brake system with an "panic assist" feature. While it rode its own platform, the G500 motor was the standard 5.0L V8, which produced just less than 300 horsepower, with fuel economy numbers in the low teens. Despite its rough-and-ready design structure, the G-Class was still a luxurious Benz underneath. A leather and walnut cabin included such features as a GPS system, 6-disc CD changer, and automatic climate control. In something of a throwback, the full-size spare tire was prominently mounted on the rear liftgate, a fitting addition to the blocky styling that made the G-wagen unique.
