Notes: Replacing the lackluster 626 sedan, Mazda unveiled the 6 for 2003. The new sedan was sportier and bolder than its pedestrian predecessor, in the hopes of gaining some sales volume. Both four- and six-cylinder motors were available. The Mazda6 used a standard 5-speed manual for its gearbox, in both 4- and 6-cylinder engines -- this was one of the only family sedans in the C/D-segment that could be purchased with a V-6/manual combination. Automatics with a manual-shift feature were optional: a 4-speed was available for the 4-cylinder, and a 5-speed (again, rare in its class) with the V6. Disc brakes were standard across the board, but ABS was optional on the 4-cylinder models. The steering was notable for its quick ratio of 16.1:1, which translated into only 2.5 turns-to-lock in the steering wheel. The sporty pretensions of the 6 could be reinforced by optional spoilers and aero packages. Standard features included air conditioning, CD player, split-folding rear seats, and variable-intermittent wipers. Leather upholstery was optional. The 6 was rather daring for Mazda, combining a sporty family car with pricing that placed it in almost a dead heat again the Accord and Camry, defying the 626's strategy of lower-priced value. Nevertheless, the Mazda6 was well-received. A hatchback sedan and wagon were unveiled with the notchback, but did not arrive until the subsequent season. This was to provide a major competitive advantage to the 6 in its segment.
