Lotus Elan Overview
The Elan was the first Lotus to incorporate a backbone
chassis when it was introduced 1962, and it became one of
Lotus's most famous and beloved designs. It was sold in both
coupe and convertible forms, with a 2+2 model available to
haul around the kiddies. It had a long run, but was replaced
by the Elite in the mid-Seventies. Lotus resurrected the name
for a new front-wheel-drive roadster in 1989, which became
known as the M100 (for the internal chassis designation). The
combination of FWD and an Isuzu turbocharged engines sat badly
with many afficionados of the marque, even though the car itself
was widely praised by the automotive press as having superb
handling. It was only sold in the U.S.A. for the 1991 and '92
model years, after which production was halted.
