Notes: Lincoln's Town Car was redesigned for 2003 along with its
Ford and Mercury cousins, ooner than one might have expected, given the traditional
longevity of Town Car marks. The reason was primarily the styling of the
1998-2002 models, which attempted to appeal to a wider and younger
audience than previous Town Cars. It failed to do so, and simultaneously
alienated some of the traditional buyer base of Lincoln's traditionalist
boulevard cruiser. The 2003 Town Car, then, returned to a rather more
formal look, reinstating the stand-up hood ornament, as well as giving
the car a generally more upright stance. The chassis was re-engineered
somewhat, increasing rigidity. It remained a steel body on a
separate perimeter frame, the last luxury sedan to utilize this configuration.
The antiquated recirculating-ball
steering was replaced by a variable-assist rack-and-pinion
setup. Brake assist was provided in addition to ABS; this system increases
braking force when the system detects stabs at the brake pedal indicative
of panic stops. Traction control was standard. Town Cars continued to appeal to an ever-shrinking
segment of the market who preferred traditional American luxury to all
else. However, the vehicle was increasingly uncompetitive and outmoded,
and its imminent demise was predicted by many automotive journalists. It
was, however, still the largest and roomiest sedan in America in 2003. The
Signature trim level added heated seats, a better sound system, and other
refinements, while the top-flight Cartier offered fog lights, high-intensity
discharge headlamps, and a power-operated trunklid. The
Cartier L model was stretched six inches to increase
rear legroom as Lincoln's shot at the aftermarket limousine market.
