Notes: The original Lincoln Navigator, introduced in 1998, helped to define a whole market segment (the luxury SUV), and made Cadillac break its promise to never build a truck. In 2003, Lincoln redesigned its big SUV, which shared its platform with Ford's Expedition. The new Navigator featured independent rear suspension, which provided additional space for third-row seating while notably improving ride quality. It was available with rear-wheel drive or a 4-wheel-drive system with low-range gearing. A new rack-and-pinion steering system helped improve handling and steering feel. Improved handling is, of course, subjective: the Navigator was still a three-ton automobile. Visually, the new 'Gator was almost identical in size to the first-generation model. The main changes involved lowering the front bumper to help prevent cars from being steamrollered, and an enlargement of the headlights. The interior was substantially revised, and indeed much-improved. Power running boards were available, as was a power-assisted rear tailgate (in Ultimate trim). Both Premium and Ultimate trim levels offered heated/cooled front seats. While a notable improvement over its predecessor, the Navigator still was a part of a declining market segment, as many SUV buyers shifted to smaller crossover models.
