Notes: The ES 300 became the first fourth-generation Lexus model when
it was redesigned for 2002. Larger, but especially taller, the new sedan
projected a much more formal appearance. The new sedan was again built on the same
platform as the new-for-'02 Toyota Camry. In Japan, the ES 300 was sold
as the Toyota Windom. With the appearance of the IS 300 in 2001, Lexus
now had two sedans in the entry-luxury segment. This allowed them to
position the IS 300 as a compact sports sedan with rear-wheel drive,
while the redesign of the ES 300 made it into a front-drive midsize LS 430,
appealing to traditional luxury buyers. A prominent grille and unique
taillamps helped distinguish this Lexus from its mainstream Camry sibling.
The ES 300 was powered by the 3.0L V6 engine of the Camry, but utilized
a Lexus-unique 5-speed automatic transmission, adding an extra cog. This
allowed the ES sedan even smoother operation and shifting. Four-wheel disc
brakes with anti-lock were standard, with an optional package of brake assist,
traction control, and antiskid system. A Mark Levinson sound system
remained a favourite option. Another option was the Adaptive Variable Suspension
setup, which featured driver-controlled adjustable shocks.
With these changes, the ES 300 continued to be a critical standard-setter
in the entry-luxury market.
