2001 Lexus LS 430
Body style(s): 4-door sedan
Trim Levels: base
MSRP range: $54,005
Notes: Lexus's top-flight LS series entered its third generation with
a 2001 redesign. The car was made larger, inside and out. A premium was
placed on smoothness of operation and comfort. The LS 430 earned its new
name by the incorporation of Lexus's new 4.3L quadcam variable-valve-timed
V8. This engine gave the sedan 290 horsepower, and was balanced so well
that Lexus was able to stand a pyramid of crystal glasses on the car's
hood, start the engine, and not have the glasses fall. The powertrain
was a 5-speed fully-automatic transmission; no manual-shift mode was
provided. The standard range of safety features found in this class was
available, although no rear side airbags were provided. The new car's
styling was evolutionary, typical of Lexus and its parent, Toyota.
Although a generally appealing design, with a sumptuous interior, the
exterior styling trended to the subtle, like Audi, and away from the
panache of Jaguar's XJ8 or the Teutonic sensibilities of Mercedes-Benz's
S-Class. A no-cost option, available with the 17" wheels, was a Euro-tuned
suspension which tightened the LS 430's handling nicely.
