Notes: A heavy restyle was peformed on the S-Type for 2003. Although the exterior of the sedan was little changed, a great deal of reengineering was performed beneath the surface, stiffening the chassis, revising the drag coefficient, and all many of other upgrades. Most systems were affected. The base 3.0 car received a 5-speed manual transmission as standard this year. Optional on this car and standard on other models was a new 6-speed ZF automatic -- taken straight out of the 2002 BMW 7-Series. The engine of the V8 car was also replaced with a stroked-out version now displacing 4.2L. Horsepower jumped by 20 as a consequence. Stability control was standardized across the board this year. Most notable of all: Jaguar added the S-Type R to the lineup, a performance version of the mid-luxury sedan aimed at the likes of the 'Benz E-Class. Supercharged and intercooled, the R's motor could generate nearly 300 horsepower. This was backed up by massive Brembo brakes. It was distinguished by unique interior trim, and a mesh grille up front.
