Hyundai Elantra

Overview

Intending to offer a compact car that could compete with the likes of the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Motors introduced the Elantra to American shores in 1992, positioning it between their famous (or infamous) and dirt-cheap Excel and the rather larger Sonata. The Elantra was first offered as a sedan, while subsequent redesigns offered first a wagon, and then a hatchback to supplement the lineup. By the turn of the century, the Elantra had grown such that it was rated as a midsize car by the EPA, but it continued to offer good value for money.
