2003 Hummer H2
Body style(s): 4-door sport-utility vehicle
Trim Levels: base
MSRP range: $48,455
Notes: The Hummer brand doubled its offerings for 2003 with the
introduction of the new H2. Like the H1, the H2 was built at an AM
General plant for General Motors, and was badged as a Hummer. The new
H2 shared its chassis with GM's GMT800 platform; the H2 was essentially
a shortened Chevrolet Suburban. Shorter than even the Chevrolet Tahoe,
the H2 was much heavier, weighing in at 6400lbs., and capable of taking
2200lbs. more in payload. Like its godfather, the new SUV was
designed to be a superb off-roader, but unlike the famous original
Hummer (now called the H1), the H2 was intended to be usable on the
streets. Traction control was standard, as was a 2-speed transfer case,
equipped with a 2.64:1 low range. Yaw control was not offered. The
suspension for the H2 was derived from the 2500-series Suburban.
Relatively roomy up front, the optional third-row seat was far more
claustrophobic. Next to this single chair was the massive spare tire,
bolted vertically against the wall. The interior was otherwise quite
comfortable, based mostly on the Tahoe. The H2 immediately became one of the
most popular vehicles in consumer surveys, and, being priced at less
than half of its gargantuan elder, was considerably more reachable.
