Honda Civic
Overview
The Honda Civic arrived as a subcompact in the United States in 1973,
where it quickly began to build a reputation for quality and reliability
that became one of the envies of the industry. Through successive
generations of renamed and retooled domestic compacts, the Civic
continued, with only one continued rival, the Toyota Corolla, with
which the Civic dueled every year for the title of best-selling
small car in America. Introduced as a hatchback, the Civic was
first offered as a 4-door sedan in 1981, which became the enduring
configuration. Wagons came and went, as did 2-door hatches, and later,
2-door coupes, but the sedan became the bulk seller. It also spawned
a short-lived targa model, the Civic del Sol. The Civic became a
favourite of the tuner crowd, who souped up the unassuming car
in turbocharged engines and wild body kits. Like most cars, the Civic
kept growing with every redesign, such that it eventually moved from
the subcompact to compact category. In 2007, this led to the introduction
of the Honda Fit, displacing the Civic as the smallest car in the Honda
lineup.
