Notes
Now four years old, and facing a brand-new Toyota Corolla, Honda gave the
Civic a restyle for the 2009 model year, along with an expanded sedan lineup,
and slight tweaks to trim. The restyle was relatively modest. A slightly bolder
main grille was in evidence, and the lower air dam was split into three sections,
rather than one large intake; the coupe grille was given a unique treatment, blacked
out with no chrome strip (as before, the Civic Si used a body-color grille frame instead of
chrome). Slight tweaks to the headlights, coupled with more prominent
LED taillights and clear turn signal lenses, rounded out the exterior improvements
across the line. Honda's proliferation of trim levels, while avoiding option packages, was shown
in full force for the refreshed Civic, with DX-VP and LX-S trims added to the
sedan; oddly, these trims were not available on the coupe. For $750, the DX-VP (which had
already been on sale in Canada) addressed the fundamental weaknesses of the stripped-out
DX trim by adding air conditioning and a stereo system, without the power features,
cruise control, and interior accoutrements of the LX model. The second addition was the
Civic LX-S sedan. The LX-S took the standard LX trim, and added a leather steering wheel,
front seats with suede bolstering (eliminating one of the Civic's few weaknesses: relatively flat
buckets), along with a chromed exhaust tip, integrated trunk-top lip spoiler, and alloy wheels.
The overall effect was a sportier overall appearance, somewhat analogous to the Toyota Corolla S,
but oddly, without any tweaks to the lower front valence, which would made the LX-S even more
distinctive. In other updates, the EX and Si models received new alloy wheel designs; the Si
also gained front foglights. Traction/stability control also showed up on more models, being
standardized on the EX-L and Hybrid models. Unfortunately, it was still not offered on the rest
of the lineup. Leather upholstery also became optional for the Hybrid sedan, and the available
navigation system gained Bluetooth wireless connectivity for cellphones. Finally, the limited-edition
Mugen Si sedan from 2008 was discontinued for the '09 model year. Civics continued to
sell well for Honda, a result of their superb fit-and-finish, reliability, and good feature
content, coupled with the relentless pressure of gas prices.
