1999 Chrysler 300M
Body style(s): 4-door sedan
Trim Levels: base
MSRP range: $28,895
Notes: Having redesigned the Concorde/Intrepid twins for 1998, Chrysler
added new variant models for 1999: the 300M and LHS. It is instructive
to compare these two sedans head-to-head. The 300M was biased toward
sportiness; it rode a shorter platform suited to Europeans roads and
cities, had a tightly-tuned suspension, 17" tires, and higher-effort
power steering. It did not have the variable-assist feature of its longer
sister, but it did have Chrysler's AutoStick transmission, which allowed
manual shifting of the automatic transmission. Traction control and ABS
were standard, as were dual front airbags; side airbags were not initially
offered. Both were spacious inside, although the LHS was notably larger,
especially in the rear seat and trunk. The 300M was conceived as the
flagship model for Chrysler, and it faced down a broad range of the
entry-luxury market. By virtue of its size, sporty instincts, and powerful
quadcam V6, the 300M sat astride the fence separating entry- and mid-lux
sedans. The optional sport package incorporated an even-steeper-ratio
steering system, special liners on the brakes, and 16" wheels to better
corner the car. The suspension was also tightened for more road feel.
