Notes

Now three years old, BMW's flagship sedan line added new features for 2004, and gained a performance model, the 760i. The 2004 760i was the first short-wheelbase 7-Series model sold in the United States with a V-12. Meant as a sportier 7-Series, perhaps in the vein of the S55 AMG from Mercedes (albeit more muted), the 760i offered many of the features of the 745 Sport Package, including the 3-spoke sport wheel and gloss black exterior trim, and sport seats as a no-cost option. The 760i rode on massive 20-inch alloy wheels, which were unique to that trim level. Although it was a late addition, debuting at the 2004 Chicago Auto Show, the 760i was sold by BMW as a 2004 model, despite claims to the contrary from some automotive publications. As for the rest of the line, new features became available. 745i and 745Li models switched wheel designs, replacing the old style with the Styling 94 wheels that had been available only with run-flat tires. On the 760Li, run-flat tires or all-season tires were both available only with the exclusive forged 18-inch rims. Satellite radio from Sirius became optional in the '04 model year, but the biggest new option was adaptive headlights. Electrical motors pivoted the beams based on steering inputs, "steering" the lights into corners. A new humidity sensor was incorporated into the climate-control system, and iDrive was somewhat simplified to improve ease-of-use for functions such as changing channels on the radio. Finally, the tire pressure monitor was adopted as standard equipment. While the US now was offered four 7-Series models, even more were available in Europe from the 6-cylinder 730i and the small V-8 735i and 735Li, to the 730d and 740d diesels. The latter turbodiesel produced 230 horsepower and an impressive 413 pound-feet of torque, all while getting 29mpg.
