2001 BMW Z3 & M
Body style(s): 2-door roadster, 2-door hatchback

Trim Levels: Z3 2.5, Z3 3.0, M [roadster]; 3.0, M [coupe]
MSRP range: $31945-$42700

Notes: In its sixth year, the Z3/M models, both roadster and breadbox runabout coupe, were becoming long in tooth. Complaints about cramped interior space, low-grade materials, and insecure handling at the edge of the car's performance envelope required attention. However, since the new Z3 replacement was still two years off, BMW elected to boost power for all engines for the 2001 model year. The 2.5L I6 gained 14 horsepower and was redesignated 2.5 (accurately reflecting the displacement), the 2.8L six was bumped to three liters even, and Motorsport's 3.2L I6 received stepless variable valve timing, boosting horsepower. Also, the Z3 models could be equipped with Steptronic manumatic transmission instead of the standard Getrag 5-speed manual.
